I had to tear out my dash to run some new wires for my new (to me) power windows. Ive been kicking around the idea of installing my three Koda 8's in the dash, so I figured while I had it out, I would start it 8)
I was planning on putting all three in there, but after some more trimming of the dash and seeing how I could make the encloser removable after its done, I think Im only going to run two..

You are going to have some serious midbass in there.....

Will that mess with the imaging. Or is midbass not directional.

as long as he keeps it lowpassed no higher than 150-200hz it soundn't pose much of an issue.

Update pics. From what I had in the first set of pics. I put the dash back in the car then glassed up and around where I think I wanted the box to end. Since then, it has been sanded with 40 grit to open up some weak spots and to blend the two sessions. Then glassed again to what these pics are. There is 60 sq ft of mat and around 80 oz's of resin to this point. Most of the glass is around 4 layers thick which I think will be fine. Theres very few flat spots.

:P
I dont know excatly where everything will be crossed at. K8's will probably be around 80hz's down. Extremis will be from 80hz's up to around 3-700 hz's and the Fr's will take over from there. Depending on how the fr's do, I still may add a tweeter. I think if I did that, I get alittle bigger amp for the extremis. Something like the Orion 8002 which I believe is 200x2 at 4 ohms. Then depending on if I get the SX's. I may try and do some crazy thing by spliting the sub frequencies between the k8's and sx's. Maybe run the sx's up to 50-60hz's, and split everything else up from there. All this is going to take some time to get right. But I think it will be pretty bitchen in the end. 8)

if you have those FR's angled towards your head, i don't think you'll need a tweeter.... even my WR's come close.... and i haven't angled them yet. THo.... i am really sensative to those upper freqs, so maybe you will want more.

I dont usually work on my projects for too long. Maybe an hour or two whenever I get motivated or bored lol. I think this summer when singlesub gets his gear together, I may hold a little bbq/get together/install party. The plan is to take a week or two off work (paid of course) and try to get the whole install done in one shot. But with that, help and company would be great. I cant really think of building and installing a 24 cube box by myself

actually... its the warm air from off of the pacific ocean... Britain has the same exact maritime (sp?) climate. Yeah, its not fun being in the cold, but if I have to be here, i'm very thankful for who ever invented remote start. I don't know how people can live without it. Technology is old enough, you'd think every middleclass resident over here would have one.

Thats the grills css is offering with the drivers. They really arnt anything special. Just 1/2" mdf with a camfer on the outside, 4 small magnets to attactch to the mounting screws and wrapped in grill cloth. Just one less than I have to worry about 8)
I thought these little 4's would be easier to mount that the koda comps. Its actually more of a pain since they have to be mounted on axis.

Little update. I trimed the fiberglass back with the thought of having a red kick panel with a black speaker pod. Well, making the two seperate I didnt like the way it was going to look. Custom panels should be one piece. So with the rings mounted I made some struts out of 1/2" mdf. Took the glass off and mounted the rings straight to the plastic. More pics to come as I get them done.

Where do you buy your fleece or is that something else?
I reeeeeaaaalllllyyyy hate fleece. After its stretched out over a mold, unless you have access to the back side, its nearly impossible to soak resin all the way through it. I'll never use it again. Thats grill cloth and you should be able to get it in any decent fabric store. I think it runs around 8-10 bucks a yard and its around 4ft wide. Ive also used swim suit material thats 90% poly and 10% spandex. That worked well but is kind of expensive. Id only pick that up if theres need for extreme stretching for tight or odd shapes. Grill cloth is best IMO for 99% of any molds for glassing.
95Honda
01-27-2006, 06:11 AM
Hmm, thought it look suspiciously like grill cloth....
I've used fleece a buch before, and yes it was a pain to get the resin through. Grill cloth would probably conform to the shape much, much better also.... Well Robert, I have some kicks I'm building this weekend. Imma give grill cloth a shot!
Robert
01-27-2006, 01:06 PM

Grill cloth is my choice flavor as well. I only tried Fleece once after seeing it's popularity online and hated how much resin it needed.
On that Porsche install I did, Wal Mart didn't have any grill cloth so I tried this stretchy thick nylon material. That was a huge mistake because it was so stretchy, the weight of the resin made it sag, ruining my shape. Or when I did finally stretch it tight enough, the material was so thin it couldn't hold any resin. So you can go too far the other way as well. ;)
Robert
01-28-2006, 11:17 AM
Grill cloth thins out pretty good. But its nice if your expecting the mold to bond with the wood. I tried the fleece on my single brahma box and the fleece never propely bonded to the mdf because I couldnt get it to soak through. Live and learn I guess..
Grill cloth is kinda flimsy stretched. I think the best was the swim suit material. Its stretches like a mofo and keeps it shape very well. Its just soo damn expensive. Almost twice the cost grill cloth.
Robert

Top and bottom have been glassed. Bottom is being reenforced with fiberglass bondo. It will all be smoothed out when I get there and buy some more bondo.

Almost done. Just have to mount the amp, finish one side of the box, wire and mount the subs.

Had a fun little meter day today. My bro's dual 10's did a 138.9 legal and a 139.6 with the door open. The quad 12 box did a 141.6 legal, 142.3 door open and a 152.6 in the port at 25hz's 8) Nothing spectacular but not too bad daily systems designed for more sq than anything. Another guy was there with a single Pioneer 12 running a tcab style encloser that metered a 135.xx with around 1900 watts.. I'll hopefully get some pics and vids next saturday during a local grand opening.
Eh, almost forgot, I also metered the Xxx 18. It did a 126 at 45ish hz's on the front window of the house (loudest area to the ear) and a 144.x at 35ish hz's in the port 8) It really needs a bigger box. 12 cubes isnt cutting it. I didnt try and different firing positions but it wouldnt meter below 30hz's. :?

So I got the motivation to work on my car again today. I dont know if it was motivation to play with my car or try out all the new air tools I just bought lol. Anyways, its startng life molded to the door sheet metal..
I cant say enough for how much help air tools are with fiberglass work. I honestly dont know how I lived without it. Unfortunately, I had to stop becasue I killed the compressor. Good thing its under warrenty
