ok, so i fried the chip in my computer on sunday, and i hate being without the ability to watch dvd's in my room (its way too cold downstairs.... my hands went numb while trying to play x-box the other day). So i finally decided to buy the cheapest dvd player i could find... without looking very hard. Went into circuit city, $35 down and i got a polaroid with component vid, and dig-coax audio. wish it had optical instead of coax, but oh well. I don't have a coax so i'll just have to use the regular old rca's.

anyway.... thing acts a bit funny, dvd menus & text sometimes seem like it is shaking. Also, there will be random distortion sometimes.... like a few groups of lines on the screen that don't appear right, kinda like if the dvd player isn't reading the disc quick enough.

The first night i also had issues with it doing fastforward faster than 2x.... but the 2nd time i used it that worked fine. Maybe it was just the disc.

and finally, got some hum on the audio, didn't show up until the 2nd time i used it....

not sure how much of this is environmental, or a direct result of the product.but for $35 ($25 if i get around to sending in a rebate and ACTUALLLY getting it back).... i don't really care. hopefully some of these wierd issues will work themselfs out like they sometimes seem to do.

EDIT: someday i'll be able to afford my nice $600 denon unit

Does that DVD player still have quirks? Or did it start working ok?

The Toshiba 3950 I bought for 60 bucks over 2 years ago still works fine.
It does make a clicking noise with some CD's, some don't. It's always done that however.

I use it every day for music, and watch DVD's.
I run a S-link to the TV, analog out for audio. I may lose resolution with S-link, but I doubt it with this television. The picture still has a clean look.

fastforward & fast rewind work perfectly... still get some hum... drive is a lil noisey when you tell it to do something different (ie, you tell it to go to the menu, or to skip chapters.. it'll spin up a lil.. make some motor noises)
still get some graphic distortion... had some issues with it reading a disc last night.... worked fine in my roommates computer tho... so not sure if there was a problem with the readhead or what... the disc looked fine... i dunno.
