Went to visit the audio friend of mine today. He scores a Mitsubishi DA-A10 power and the pre-amp that goes with it off eBay. Second chance offer of a 127 bucks, probably 140 total.
This isn't his auction, but this is what he got.

Dual mono amp, even the pre-amp is dual mono.
I thought it would sound hard and cold possibly.
When I showed, he had a JBL L166 Horizon on one side. With a Fostex 12" (I no idea what model #) woofer on the other side.
It's a beefy woofer with large motor with a 4 inch voice coil, and a aluminum dust cap. It's rather sensitive and can take quite a bit of power.
It's in a 4 foot cabinet (A little large..) tuned around 40 hz.
With a Pioneer/Watkins 5 inch midrange, and a Selenium ST-324 for the tweeter on top off the cabinet.
The JBL L-166 have a nice dull flat dead sound compared to the combination of drivers on the other side, not near as efficient.
Maybe the JBL was wore out, or the crossover is......
That amp and pre-amp has a nice neutral sound with tight bass, maybe a bit dull on top.
At least compared to a 2A3 triode amp, but it's not really that big of a deal.
The Fostex 12 inch woofer can take some power.
You could pretty much grind into the volume full blast with that amp and the woofer hung in there.
Nice and clean, tight, hardly much cone breakup at all. Impressive woofer those Fostex 12's.
He has a pair of Celestion Ditton 15's, a little bookshelf speaker with a 8 inch woofer, a eight inch passive radiator and a little one inch spiral looking tweeter.
They have a good sound, but too power hungry to make justice out of the 2A3 tube amp or any other lower powered SS amplifiers.
We hooked them up to that Mitsubishi amp and pre-amp. That worked rather well.
Those little bookshelf speakers could really boogie then, with some pretty damn good bass. But there was some cabinet resonance when you really pushed them hard.
The Mitsubshi did sound sort of dull on top, when compared to the SET amp. But he drags out this little black thing, I can't recall the brand name HDD or something. It has inputs and outputs, a power switch, a bypass switch, and a slider control.
It gives a bit more accentuation on the midrange and top end, as you moved the slider. With kind of a width expansion I suppose.
He fed that box thing through the tape loop into the amp.
It sounded kinda tinny and zingy at first, then around 15 minutes later it really helped open up the mid and top end of the Mitsubishi.
We compared it with the 2A3 amp on one side, with the DA-A10 and the black box on the other side.
The Mitsubishi amp with the box bypassed sounded dull on top. When you put the box in circuit the amp sounded pretty much on par with the 2A3 amp. With more power and a more punchy bass.
That was strange how the cheap little 12 dollar box helped like that.
I like that Mitsubishi amp/pre-amp, I think he got a good buy there.
I could live with the amp and pre-amp no problem.....
