Talnlanky and I built the Adire Audio folded Tempest horn this weekend. It turned out pretty nice and only took about 2 hours to build. He took pictures with his phone and will hopefully be able to download them and post them soon. It wasn't really as complicated as I thought it would be. Hopefully he will add a little more to this write up....

dammit... didn't see this thread.. i posted about it in the PA section... hehehe oh well...

okies.. here's the plans so people can learn a bit about it
http://www.adireaudio.com/Files/TempestBassHornPlans.pdf

Mike is honestly one of the best guys i've ever met, took time out of his day to practically make this completely by himself. And once again, picked up a few tips/tricks from him on making boxes.

i'm working on getting some pics online... might be awhile

will add more later:

ok... figured out how to upload pics from my cell to the internet... hope it doesn't cost me a fotune... we'll find out in about 40days. :D

this is a pic without the top piece, and side piece... The sub fires into the removable top piece... and the side obviously is the BIG panel that is missing . The box is laying on its side in this picture. Top piece is closest to the camera.

oh yeah. for those who don't wanna read the PDF on the plans... its 36x36x18... took 1.5sheets of MDF

have you heard it yet?

Off subject question: I have a 10yr old japanese receiver that has a sub preout and I don't know what xover is on it. So I hooked up my freq generator and ran it into the cd input and only listened to the subs and it seamed that they still had decent output at 190hz. Of course the output droped off faster around 130hz but how can I figure out where the xover is? Do any crossovers completely remove the upper freqencies.

The problem is that my sub's sound like shit because they play to high, just wondering if there is any way to tell where this thing is xover at.

thanks,

and if I had 800 I'd get that outlaw AV rec

1: no, its not complete yet (hopefully hear it this weekend
2: no crossover will completely filter out the unwanted frequencies, crossovers are rated in how quickly they will filter signal... ie 1st, 2nd, 4th order/ 6dB, 12, 24 dB per octave. That x-over is prolly a first order (6dB) in which case it'll let a lot of highs pass thru... what you could do is pick up some F-mods from parts express... something in the range of 50-80hz would prolly do what you want. They cost around $30 for a pair.
3: if you had an o-scope i think you could figure out where the x-over was set.... honestly i'd give up trying to figure where the x-over is set, and set your own on top of the existing x-over

I have the parts list for an under $30 adjustable active crossover.....

Run your oscillator again, and measure the rate at which the output of the reciever drops at every octave above, oh say, 80 Hz. That will tell you the roll-off. Every halving of outptut voltage will be a 6db drop.....

So if it is like 50V at 80Hz and 25V at 160Hz, it's a 1st order
If its like 50V at 80Hz and 12.5V at 160Hz, it's a 2nd order
If its like 50V at 80Hz and 6.25V at 160Hz it's a 3rd order.... etc, etc, etc...

Oh yeah, and if it's a 1st order, rolloff (x-over frequency) will be at about the first 6db down point, same for the other slopes correspondingly. This will still be greatly dependant on the type of slope though (shape or "Q").

The $27.80 Home Theater electronic crossover…… Works too!....

Don't laugh, it is better quality than probably 99% of the crossovers built in to a reciever....

are you sure 3rd order would be 6.25v? seems like if you half the voltage compared to a 2nd order, that you'd then be at a forth order.... and that a 3rd order would be somewhere inbetween the 4th & 2nd... say 9v???

Each 6 db will be half the voltage, therefore 18db will have half the voltage of 12db an octave below the cutoff point. There is a 12db (or 4x) voltage difference between 12 and 24 db/octave.....

Oh yeah, I'm sure....

Don't forget that your dealing with a logarithmic relation here also, that is what tends to throw people off........

lil update, finished the glueing, bondo and sanding work on Saturday while at the shop with 95honda & HaydenLake. I'll be posting the pics from that in a minute. So here are the new pics of the box, and its supposed to get covered in line X on monday, then i'll be able to take it home, drop the tempest in, and have some fun.

Anybody have an idea as to what the low end cut off frequency is? It probably wouldnt look bad corner loaded with a lamp on top  Maybe lay it flat and use it as an end table or coffee table. Run four of them as a bed frame
