Hey Guys,

Just finished one of two sub enclosures for a pair of dayton 10" RS subs.

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=295-460

These will be stereo subs (4- 10" Daytons total), powered by a PE 1000W plate amp.

They are only 1.25 cu/ft sealed with a Q of .65.
Output is still pretty good. -12/db @ 20hz without boost.

Yup. That's for sure.

1.5" front baffel.
1" top, bottom, back and sides
Bracing every four inches.

I put everything together (except for the braces) with buscuits.

I will take some pictures of the inside of the box soon.

Bracing every four inches??? Wow. Now thats a box  Def. post some pics of the inside. Are you going to make the outside purdy or leave it mdf? And how do you like them?

I'm planning on a cabon fiber and oak finish... The sides of the box will be curved by laminating 1/8" sheets of MDF. (Big plans; we will see if I actually get them done.)

Ive never seen anyone go for the carbon fiber look for their house. Sounds sweet 8)

So I decided to go veneer all around. As you can see from the picture, the side of the cabinet are curved. The void is filled with up to 1 1/2" of sand. They weigh well over 100 pounds without divers, amps, etc.

Once I finish the veneer work I will take some more photos.

Since I have been spending so much time in the shop, I thought I needed some tunes. Here are a set of 2-way Hi-Vi speakers. The cabinets were poured into the concrete wall when we built the shop...

Well the first sub has been done for some time. I still have one more to do... Thought I would post a picture of the final project. With the flash, the finish looks a lot lighter than it really is, but you get the idea.

Looks sweet. Great jerb.

How hard was the veneering process? Also, I notice in the build pics that the sides are square, then you added the bow shape. Do you have any more pics of how you did it?

The bow is the sides were made my bending 1/8" MDF over the radius and laminating them together. Next time around I will take some more photos of that process. The void was filled with up to 1 1/2" of sand. These boxes are SOLID. Veneering the curved sides was a little more difficult than those of a square box. I used cargo tie downs to apply pressure to the veneer. (I'll show more photos next time). I really liked how it turned out. Looks better than your usual rectangular box.

Yea, it looks very nice.. Though I think the sand is alittle much lol.

well... I was originally thinking lead shot...

IIRC, the preffered "Audiophile" mix was 33% shot, 33% sand and 33% kitty litter... No kidding, this was a very closely gaurded secret by many companies back in the day before there were many commercialy avalible dampening compounds for these types of applications.

I still think sand is pretty damn good. Lead shot gets way to expensive and heavy if you are going to use alot of it.... Plus lead shot is for shooting at people, not speakers...

so what do you do with the remaining 1% mike? magic pixie dust? hehehe

kitty litter... hmmm... to help soak up any smell? really, i wonder who came up with the idea of kitty litter... seems like it'd be the least dense material of the three you mentioned.
