just wondering, does it hurt anything to run the subs/amp with the gain set to minimum until I have a chance to set it correctly?

No it won't hurt anything at all.

It's really easy to set it correctly also. If you have a single sub amp, like I think you do, turn the gain all the way up.

Now listen to music, start to turn it up (volume) slowly, if the subs run out of gas before the mains, turn the gain down a bit untill they all run out at about the same volume....

If you have an adjustable subwoofer output on your deck, skip step 2 and just leave the gain all the way up, adjust at the deck.....

Your done.

actually I have an old Jensen XA2250 amp that is going to be bridged so I can get 300 watts from it. I'll be running 2 RE8's off of it.
btw, here is how I was told to set the gain.

Turn all your bass controls on your HU to off or minimum. Luckily the only thing on my HU is a slider/equalizer control...one for bass, one for treble.

Turn volume up to 3/4

Play a 50hz test tone, and SLOWLY turn up the gain until you hear distortion
Back off of the gain slightly.

Go back to HU and set the controls to where you want them, going back to reset the gain IF distortion starts again.

btw, i doubt my sub will run out of gas before the mains since they are stock.
