View Full Version : Front Baffle Arrangment

As some of you know. Im working on a wall for Geo Storm. Its for a pair of Brahma 15 mk 1.5's being pushed by two Orion 1200d's. The box is going to be 10 cubes net tuned to 20 hz's daily and Im going to start the tuning at 47 hz for burps. The whole box is going be to be double layered for 1.5" with no internal bracing.. I was looking at doing 15.5"h x 12"w for the spl port and I think 4.5"w x 14"h for the daily port.
So on to my question. I was thinking of doing a sub on each side with the port in the center. Im a sucker for symetrical. Also I like this idea because it sort of hides each sub behind a seat. Is there any better reasons on why I should change the positioning of the subs and port? The face of the baffle is 26" h x 46" w.. Any thoughts or comments?
I really want this to meter well to make up for the 138 I did with the last dual 15 setup   . But it may only see 2 to 3 comps a year..
Heres some pics of where its at now.

Luck for me I screwed up with my design. So the pics with it in the car are only single layer. The second layer is being modified to fit .. But it should all work the same.

I hate uploading to sd. It blurs the pictures I take inside. Anyways, heres a few fuzzy pics of the front baffle drawn out with black marker. Hope it gives a size reference of how everything can fit in there.

Slightly off-topic, but we support uploading pics here.. no reason to use sounddomain...
Looks good so far!

Box looks great man! I don't really see any big problems with you baffle layout. I'm pretty sure it's all going to matter where the mic is put for score: i.e. would you want non-symmetrical loading to reinforce the pressure on one side over the other. Port looks nice and big... I would go for it...
One question, why 20Hz tune?

Im one of a strange breed. Only other person I know that like bass like me is TalnLnky. Ive been through a few boxes with the Brahmas. Two in 6 cubes at 27hz's, two in 5 cubes sealed, one in 3.5 at 27 hz's and then one in 5 cubes at 20 hz's. The last one is by far my favorite. I found the recommended box to be too peaky. It sounded awesome to rap but that was it. I hate sealed! So built the 5 cube box to flatten out the respones curve. The box kinda mimic's the respones curve of sealed, just with way more low end. The upper side (60-80hz) is kinda weak, but I will eventually get around to my door pods for the Koda 8's.
As far as Im concerned too, people dont want to demo a car that plays bass like every other car out there. People kinda freak when I show them 20-30hz's test tones at full volume  8)

Havent heard that one lmao.. Thats great. Only thing Ive heard is that everybody is still talking about how it looked like my hatch was going to pop off at the open house  Hopeully the wall will eliminate that rattle.

yeah you did.... cept he didn't use those exact words... last time we were both there.... when stunna was there too... he said something like, yeah you really like that gut busting bass.
so i may have gone a lil artistic with the wording... but same thing.
EDIT: looking at that baffle.... those circles.... are those the cutout diameters... or sub mounting diameter??? makes a big difference

I would imagine that the sub one is the outer diameter because he said the ports 15.5 tall and its tangent to the subs.

Yeah, thats the outside diameter of the subs.. (lay sub down on baffle and draw around it)..
I think Im gonna make a fancy port that contours to the subs to gain alittle more room across.
BTW, thanks for all the replies :!: :D

Subs on one side.... diagonally (at an attempt to get them one on top of the other...the driver side should house port.
Passenger side up to you wich sub is up and which is down.
Symetrical looks good...but air needs to move freely for heavy spl...
Think about it...your port in the center on the down side...... air comes crashing to the back of the box, mixes and foils then forces itself out the port, by the time that confused reaction has settled, your subs have pushed one or 2 more times ontop of that spiratic mess. Not to say it won't work...it will...and will wang too....and they'll unload very evenly...
But side porting is where your maximum efficiency will come from and maximum spl will also increase from powerful and effective radiation of port area. Your box design will call for basically chopping/blocking off the upward slant of the box in order to side port...but would work well because of how the air will flow so well, I can draw it out if you don't know what i'm talkin about.
But, who cares what I think 8)

In perspective .... of course as I said...you original plan will work but for maximum wang.... you may want to consider this...and of course you can make the initial port slightly larger and shallow for spl...and the longer port can be inserted as just like a normal one...and much less work to change out.

My thoughts exactly
Actually, I was hoping you would chime in. :D 8) Would the way the box is shaped have any adverse effects on the subs performance? The flat walls on the sides are only about 6"s then it slants toward the rear piece. For 180sq inches of port (is that right? I remember you saying 3/4 of the sd), it would be around 7"s long.
Also, what if I went with sub - sub - port. Like this except port on the right.

Or should the port be all the way to the bottom of the box?

might be wrong... but i think to be the loudest you'd want the port to be the height of the box. Make it easy for the sound to get out.
Robert
06-02-2005, 08:31 PM
I doubt that will happen. As you can see in the pics, the box is angled top to bottom. To do that the port would have a larger exit than entrance. :? I guess as long as its the same sq inches it would work, but Im not going to attempt that.
If I put the port on the side, I could dump it to the bottom of the box, which would be fine, or I could keep it up higher like where its marked out in the pics..
Also since the main part of the box is already built, I dont want to compensate for a bigger port. I could probably go a smidge bigger, but not enough to make it worth while.

All right.. Forget my other questions.. Im going to make the port 19"h x 10"w x 11.75"s deep (190 sq. in. Ryan :P ). This gives me 10 cubes tuned to 47hz's to start. This will peak from 50-52 hz's which is my cars resonant frequency without a wall. Im also going to block off the area above the port. That way I can raise the tuning by adding port area instead of subtracting length.
Thanks for the help everyone! :!: ! I'll post pics up in this thread as I get it done. :D

Robert....
I said 1/3 of the SD for street wanging/ very loud
and about 2/3 for raw spl
I also drew a picture showing Sub sub port exactly what you said.....i took your original picture and flipped it then drew...
I also did my best to show you wouldn't have a problem with the port size because you'd have to block off some of the height....study the picture carefully..
The flat part thats 6 inches deep at the exit of your side wall would just be smoothed out with bondo or something...;) come on man..think this out...

Sorry about that man. I glanced at the pic and thought it was just a quick refernce of how it should be laid out  . I didnt look into.. I like it, but I may keep the slight bend in the port. It wont be hard to build off of and its only a 23 degree bend.

Well. After a deal I cant refuse. This project has been scraped. But not before I test fit it one last time to see where I can gain some room. After getting the front baffle in, I almost regret it, almost... :D Heres a few pics of where it was going.

Whats to come? Look at my sig   8)
Im not quite sure how it will be setup. With a baffle thats only 41.5"s wide after wood thickness, it should be interesting.. I may just go with a sick daily and turn the geo metro thats sitting on the side of our house into a superstreet or extreme car.
