View Full Version : Still blowing fuses
I had thought my problem was solved once I upgraded to 40 amp fuses... for a week or so everything was great, nice and loud longer than i could handle, etc.
However, toward the end of that week I deceided to run the high end through the EQX as well as the lows. (Previously didnt due to some noise problems)
While making the adjustments on the EQX, I came across a startling and quite embarassing discovery...
 Only one input channel was plugged in
Sigh, anyway, since plugging in the other side (ugh) I can get to maybe 2/3 volume before the fuses pop in the amp. Dont get me wrong, its almost as loud there as it was at full volume before, so, eventually this will be a good thing. But right now I cant kick it up at all without popping the fuses.
So, is there a way to determine if the charging sytem is the problem BEFORE dropping the cash on a HO alt and battery? Would running the system with the car off (to pull power just from the battery and not the alt) be a good test?

That EQX is probably "Line Driving" the signal...making it like 4 or 6 volts or more....so you'd have to turn the gain on the amp down...its probably getting a hotter signal to work with...
You'd notice if your "BASS WAS LOUDER" after you added the eqx but would blow fuses at higher volumes...
You also would notice a clipping sound as well possibly..
Would resemble a click or clank.
Its like having a 8v preoutput head unit on an old 2v input amp...too much signal...makes amp overdrive and heat up gagging to put out the power.

Hmm, well yea that was kind of the idea, to boost the gains to the amp for maximum output.
I'll bring it down a few and see how that works.

If it's blowing fuses, the box impedance is dropping to low for the amp to handle (draws alot of excess current to keep the output voltage up). Also, if your cars voltage is dropping too low, the amp is trying to make up for it by drawing more current (It has a switching power supply). So it is drawing more current than it should do to the low voltage. Trying it with the car off is even worse because the voltage will be lower. To try and see if it is a voltage problem, find someone with a burly charging system, like a 1 ton truck or something. Get some heavy gauge jumper cables, have him hook up to your car while you are both running, give it hell, monitoring his voltage also, and see if you still blow fuses. If you don't, order that new alt.
So, I think this is finally solved for good.
After upgrading to the 40 amp fuses I could defineatly push everything to the limit, but fuses would still blow more often than what I would consider acceptable. They seemed to do so at the same point in certain songs as well which I thought was strange.
I started bending the spades on the fuses so that the plastic casing would push up extra snug into the amp's housing and that seemed to help.
Fuses still blew on occasion so finally a couple days ago I added a drop of epoxy on each side of the troubled fuses and pushed them in to place.
I figure epoxy will give that extra umph to hold the fuses in place during extended periods of 'abuse' while still being easy to remove should a fuse actually burn out.
Testing wise, I've been maxxing things out for the last couple days trying to get it to cut off and so far so good. Can't say the same for the ole eardrums though.
Now I just need to find a meter to get the resonant frequency of the car and itll be off to burp button land :)

In case anyone wanted to see what this madness was about....
That sub still in one piece???? :D
Oh yes... can't say the same for the car however. The drivers side window crank rattled itself off yesterday. I think it actually ruined the clip.
But yea, I can put my stamp of approval on the XXX, no doubt about it. Its never bottomed out or made any noises it isnt supposed to. Easily the best woofer I have ever had anything to do with 8)

Have you had anyone sit in there yet while you were cuttin loose with it?
Well, myself.. and the people eating in restaurants on Front St... oh and the cars around me at the stop lights..
Does that count?
