im looking to put an alarm system on my truck and i have no real experience with it though i have been doing electronics based stuff for a long time now.
im wondering how many of you have done your own and which brands or model alarms that you guys prefer.

my friend is a ford technician so he has done a whole lot alams and he said hed help me out i just got to find an alarm i want to do

ive heard vipers are pretty easy and i was thinking that might be sufficient

o btw i dont really need anything more then keyless entry...other things would be nice but idk if i really need it

I have installed a few Vipers back in the day.  Everything pretty much comes with decent instructions anyway, I would just buy the one that has the features you want....

Clifford Matrix alarms arnt to bad.

My preference for two ways are Compustar. Im not a huge fan of their one way alarms though.

Whats your vehicle?

im looking into a viper alam since its pretty cheap and my friend has already set up a few

compustar would be a great alarm but i dont really want to drop a whole lot of money on my car since all i really need is keyless entry and remote start would be nice and maybe a few auxilaries to control some random ish

How much are you looking to spend? I could probably get a great deal on a Compustar for you. I know I can get the 900fm two way for $200. Theres another two way under that I could probably get for around $150. Ive never priced the one way alarms. I could also get Micro for cheap.

Is your friend charging you for install?

Your truck is a fairly straight forward install. Theres nothing special in the wiring that would make it super difficult.

Not to thread jack...

Robert-

My dad had a alarm put in at the Bellevue Car Toys a few years ago, it never worked right and he ended up unhooking it.  With all the new gear I have thrown in, I think it would be a good idea to get him something good.  What would you think about me sending him down your way to get a nice one installed?  I simply don't have time (or want) to do it myself...

What was wrong with the alarm? Is it still in there? and what year is his truck? Does he want to swap the whole thing out for a new or just try and fix the one he has? We should be able to work something out.

I'm not sure if there was really anything broke with it, it just performed very poorly.  The shock sensor was set up very sensitive from what he was telling me, the Valet function didn't work right and the install was very shoddy.  They ran the antenna radiating element against a steel panel, I don't mean near one, I meant taped flat to it..... Basically an RF short...  The remote range was horrible...  I don't even know the brand.  He has an 02' F-150, as stock as they come.  Power nothing, vinyl interior and a 5-speed...  He just needs a simple, decent well installed set-up.  I don't know if any of the old alarm (3 years old maybe?) is worth keeping, with what he has into the stereo, I don't think he'll mind spending a few $$ for a decent setup...  I am going to install a starter kill also...

His truck shouldnt be too hard. Theres a few extra wires to tag and some diodes needed. Nothing bad though. If he wants remote start, he'll need a bypass module too.

This is the alarm Ive had in my past two cars. I love it to death. Its not overly complicated and has excellent range.

The one under it isnt bad either. Its basically the same with around half the range.

This is the one under it. Its the same brain with a different remote and antenna.

Both of them come with starter kill relays too. Well, most alarms do now a days. Could throw in actuators for power door locks..
