Author Topic: Father needs speakers  (Read 2334 times)

Well, my father is seeking a new speaker setup. I need to find him something that will sound good in a L/R setup with the expansion to a 5.1 - 7.1 setup in the real close future.  I was always partial to the 2641 speaker setup.  With the now defunct adire, is there anything that is comparable sound and price wise?  He listens to a lot of LP's and will be soon looking into DVDA and SACD's.  His LCR will be where we will focus most of the money (which is not that big of an issue).  Dang, this can be a fun project if I can find the right speakers for him.

So, any information / input you have would be great.

well ithought i already posted this, but Huh? here is a site that has a review of 6.5" to 7" drivers and it rates them on Usability, Build Quality, Consistency, and Value..it also gives spl/phase vs. the frequency charts

hopefully this will aid you in your search for speakers

i love me some dayton reference.  though they're not as long throw as the extremis, maybe you can make up by hiking up to 7" woofers?  the 8" in my fronts can really pump out some nice bass, and they're ported all the way up at like 55-60 hz.  You running a sub?  I also really really like my Vifas, I think they're the MG's?  yellow cones.  PE doesn't have them anymore I guess, darn.  4".....I dunno.  morel maybe?  I like my Peerless dome tweets in my surrounds, the Dayton classics in my LCR aren't quite as nice.  and that's the extent of my experience.

Did you build your 2641's from a kit? If you did, then you are probably aware of this:

http://acoustic-visions.com/~acoustic/products/speakers/complete_kits/pdf/kit2641instructions.pdf

I would think you could still get the Usher 9950 tweeters.

As far as the midrange and woofer drivers, I would guess you could probably try to find matching drivers with as close of TS parameters as the original Adire drivers.
Or try to find the Adire midrange and woofers, if they are still floating around.

The pdf shows dimensions, part list, and everything else.

I've had a pair of Usher 9950 tweeters for a few years.......they are a good tweeter.....boogie right up there next to Scanspeak.

I was playing with a pair of ESS model 10 bookshelf speakers the other day.
The original tweeters are too bright for my taste. Using a tube amp helps, but it's still objectionable to my ears.
I recalled my Usher tweeters...hmmm...they dropped right in......

The original tweeters are more sensitive than the Usher 9950's, but things sure did smooth out soundwise.
I swapped out a 5uF non-polarized electrolytic for a 6 uF polypropelene, and they sound rather good.
For a bookshelf speaker.......rather strong bass for a bookshelf speaker as well.

Check out some of Zalytron Kits http://www.zalytron.com They have been doing this for a long time and have a bunch of solid designs, the crossover schematics and most cabinet drawings are posted on thier site, all you have to do is buy the drivers, and discount if you buy as a "kit".....

I haven't heard any of the Parts Express kits except for the BR-1, which is good for $125, but not an all-out LCR.....

Check out Madisound also http://www.madisound.com they have kits and have been around forever also....

I don't see them either.

Mike, do you know of any good "drop in" replacements that I could get to work with the 2641's?
