Author Topic: Going to experiment with Fullrange  (Read 1747 times)

Well this was  a complete spur of the moment thing to do.  The speakers are ordered and I have the design figured out.  They will be going into BIB enclosures.  I used the BIB calculator that I found online to determine the size and shape of the enclosures.  Since I am only doing this just to mess around, I went with a low cost Dayton full Range 5".

I probably won't get a chance to build the enclosures until after the holiday season (seeing that I will be working saturdays now too), but I was wondering what a good material would be to use.  I figured MDF was a good choice because of it's low cost.  Would it be worth it for me to spend a little more money and buy some higher grade wood?

And another question I have is about stuffing the line.  I know it is all experimental, but how much stuffing and where in the line would be a good starting point.

Any Comments or Constructive criticism would be greatly appreciate Smiley

That's a place to start with the stuffing, but it's very much a trial-and-error kind of thing.

As for MDF, it'll work fine if you don't mind the aesthetics.

MDF is really one of the best woods for speakers, I prefer it to plywood.  I don't personally feel there are performance improvements over MDF with even the best plywoods, especially if you build correctly....  I also liked the thickness you can get MDF in.  You can get 1 1/4" almost anywhere, if you know where to look....

Lets us know about your progress, this place is dead right now, LOL!

Lol I am hopefully going to start building these soon.  I have the drivers sitting in my dining room right now.  They aren't too useful sitting there.

I used the BIB enclosure calculator to figure out my dimensions.  I can't remember them off the top of my head but it will be a little more than 3 ft tall.

Heres some pictures of the Daytons for now

Well since I have been putting this project off for a while, I figured I should get the ball rolling.  I finally used the BIB calculator and got my dimensions and drew up a cut sheet to find out how much wood I am going to need to build a pair.
I am hoping I can get this project going this weekend and/or this next week during my spring break.  I am thinking that I will spend the extra bucks and get something beside MDF in the case that I like them.  I'll have to get some pictures up as soon as I start, but I'll apologize in advance for crappy picture quality.  My phone isn't the best but it gets the job done.

More Coming Soon.
