I have been welding alot of aluminum lately, fabricating different things I have needed for work, and I have gotten pretty good with the TIG, so I decided to built a small subwoofer cabinet for a civilian contractor here.  I had him buy me a sheet of 1/4 aluminum plate and I then cut it up on a shear and welded it all together.  I cut the holes in the baffle on a Bridgeport mill and the port is a piece of 3" x 3" 1/4" wall box-section.  I put a healthy dose of "special purpose" dampening material on the inside and a little egg-crate foam...  It is surprisingly stiff and dead, better than 3/4" MDF by far...  It is quite heavy though, and I think the guy spent over $100 on the aluminum, but he wanted something fitting, since it was going in the machine shop...  Anyway, it also sounds pretty damn good with one of the Parts Express $20 Dayton DVC 10" subwoofers....
