I visited some guy with a couple Mega-buck stereos in his home using Klipsch speakers.

He's restoring a pair of Klipschorns, and found a pair of Lascala's for parts. He gave me the Lascala cabinets.

I think they are raw birch, which isn't bad looking for a Lascala. Dunno how bad of shape they are in, they didn't look too bad from a quick glance. I need to pick them up yet.

I need to figure what the generic Eminence driver model # is for the Klipsch K33E. Which is made by Eminence.
Klipsch I think wants 300 bucks a pair, which is too rich for this driver, IMO.

Lascala's bass rolls off pretty quick. I do have subwoofers to make up the difference. I guess I want to experiment with horn loaded bass........
I hate Klipsch tweeters, and I have a few supertweeters I could use. I need a stock Klipsch midhorn and driver, or maybe try two-way with a constant directivity horn.
Bi-amp, and EQ the horn for peaks and valleys for a flatter response.

A couple watts would make things boogie.
Another damn speaker project.....though this might be interesting to try.....

How was the sound there?

I'm don't know much about the LaScala, horn loaded bass?  Shoot if it is, I bet there are plenty offerings from Eminence to fit the bill for well under $300 a pair...  I also know that Klipsch never really used to many exotic woofers in most of thier systems, most were the $40-$70 type units you buy from Eminence...  I also have rebuilt a few Klipsch systems for people and never was awfully impressed with the parts quality, I think they sounded decent most of the time because they are or were based on pretty solid engineering with decent cabinets....  Back when people were concerned when a 3 foot tall speaker didn't weigh at least 100 pounds...

Found these T/S posted on DIYaudio.com for the K-33E

06-LE MH .96
07-QM 7.39
08-QE .410
09-QT .390
10-XMAX MM 8.20
11-BL TM 11.88
12-EFF % 2.91
13-FS HZ 34.46
14-MMS GMS 78.59
15-CMS mm/N .2714
16-RMS NS/M 2.3037
17-VAS LTRS 301.66
18-SD SCM 889.59
19-EBP 84.4
20-SPL dB 96.6

The Eminence Legend CB15 looks pretty close, but has a cast frame so might require some trimming of the driver mounting hole, I get those for $80 a pop...  They are within 10% or so of the specs I found for the K-33E.

The cheaper Eminence 15s have Qts that might be a little too high, end thier higher end models have lower Qts, but start raising the Fs too much and lower stroke to help with the added efficiency needed for pro audio....  That also isn't so good....

just out of curisosity, i am not really familiar with the home audio game at all but just a quick question about those Lascalas, is it a 15" woofer, a midhorn and a horn tweeter?

and assuming that it is a 15" woofer on the bottom what kind of enclosure is it? som kind of horn?

They use a 15" woofer.

I agree the parts quality of Klipsch drivers is nothing special by no means.
The ol' man outsourced parts over the years from various manufacturers, (University, EV, Stephens, Atlas, Jensen, CTS? etc....)
Then PWK had a tighter tolerance with quality control, if the outsourced parts didn't make it, they got sent back.

The K-33E is a driver that is pretty much the specced driver for the Klipschorn and Lascala. Or the bass horn is more designed around that driver.

The Cast ones seem like a good option. I can hog out the mounting area. I think someone is selling the CB15 as a K33E replacement, anyway.

I'll post the Klipsch jubilee mega-buck stereo impressions later tonight, with a good beer. I gotta get to work.....

Turns out they are raw birch. Some don't like raw birch, some do.
Bob mentioned he'd go with black lacquer. That would look nice. I dunno....I like the natural veneered finished look.

They are in good enough shape to refinish. But I dunno about the natural birch color. One has a pretty gnarly dark discoloration on top.
I could stain them dark, yuck...

Maybe black lacquer ain't a bad idea.

Somebody did a real light stain on both, and then someone else started to sand one out.

I may just sand them both out the best I can, and throw a wee bit of boiled linseed oil over them and say piss on it....

He threw in a pair of KP800 horns, something to try.
I'll probably pull a Cornwall midhorn and driver, the crossover, and try to lash up something in the laScala.

I'll go ahead and try a Fostex 15" L475 in that bass bin and see what happens. It may not even fit......or sound wretched if it does.
Maybe it'll sound good, but I kinda doubt it.

I have some cheaper Selenium slot tweeters to try, I think they are better than the Klipsch K77.
I have a pair of JBL 075 bullet tweeters I could try, but they aren't much of a supertweeter.
I have these smaller Heil AMT's. Cap them off at around 9-10 kHz. That could make a interesting tweeter.

I can use the Cornwall passive crossover. But the LaScala crosses the bass to midhorn at around 450-500 Hz. the Cornwall is 600 Hz.

I 'spose I could lash all this shit up and see how it fares.

I'll take a pic or two later, I need to get my friends truck back.

Well, the Fostex L475 lab series 15 inch woofers won't fit.
They are about 3/4 of a inch too large in diameter.

I have a older Magnavox or Jensen 15" woofer. It has a 2 inch voice coil.
A decent sized Alnico magnet with the old style strap. It uses a treated cloth corrugated surround, and has pretty good xmax for what it is.

The Fs of this driver is probably up around 50, 60 Hz I would think. I guess it's not really optimum for the LaScala bass bin, but it fit.

I had thought of trying the Cornwall's midhorn. The Cornwall's midhorn mouth is way more smaller than the stock LaScala horn's mouth.
I aquired some cheap ABS plastic horns to try. The one in the picture.
It almost fits, bummer that....
I took the Cornwall K51V midhorn driver an swapped it in one of these PH-800 horns. Screws right in.

I took the Cornwall crossover and used it in the LaScala.
That's a Selenuim slot tweeter, I won't bother with a K77 tweeter. I'm gonna try the Heil AMT next.

Not bad for a first take using one speaker, I suppose.... for a quick cobble up.
I had to pad the midhorn and tweeter to kinda balance things out.

The bass is a little rough, with some boom. I'm pretty sure the reason is this this Magnavox woofer. The higher Fs is one reason for the boominess and higher roll off.

There seems to be really good potential to me. But, it may take some mods and some cash.

The beer is fucking good.....

I spy those crossover prototype boards in the background, are you getting some use out of them?

You have some big hardware in there now!  Looks good so far....  I would maybe look into some woofers, start cruising P/E and find something suitable, we'll work a deal like we did in the past if you want.  Those cabinets would do nicely with a new pair of woofers....

Yup. I am getting good use out of the breadboard xover networks.
I may as well just build finished networks for the B&C coaxials.

But the beauty of the prototype board is you can swap out a cap, inductor or resistor, listen for a week or whatever, and swap it back and listen.

I'll more than likely use them with respect to a homebrew Lascala passive network. They will slide back behind the horn out of view.

Yes, I'll browse Parts Express for a suitable replacement woofer, I'd like to do that. That would be a good option if they have something that will work.

I have another 15" Magnavox woofer that is very similiar to the one I used already.

I got both going now, with a Pioneer PD7100 CDP.
Using the digital level control on the CDP as a volume control, straight into my little single-ended 6BQ5 Magnavox console amplifier.

It actually sounds rather good, considering......

2 watts will get these bass bins in boogie mode. Despite some low-end, and possible top-end roll-off, it's a rich sounding bass. More sensitive, and almost clean, but not quite.

A rather low levels, the bass seems to stick around. Where some speakers bass tends to drop in perceivable output at low levels.
Seems to defy the Fletcher-Munson curve I suppose.

I guess I can say I have some big rigs here......the damn things are as big as a washer and dryer.

I think I may end up prefering these over a Cornwall, once they are dialed-in.

http://www.alkeng.com/trachorn.html

I heard Khorns with these, and without.
They are quite a upgrade, a little rich, but enough to consider flogging some things to do it.

Don't need the Beyma tweeter for now, another time.....Don't really need the frame set-up either, just that horn.

They have no honk, with of course the dynamics and efficiency of a horn.

Wooferwise, I've noted the Bob Crites (BEC) eBay listings for Klipsch replacement upgrade woofers. A steel stamped basket version, with a 100 dollar bin.

Another pair of cast basket replacement woofers, with bin of $240. And you still have to hog out the sides of the doghouse on Lascala to fit them.

BEC is a well respected guy that does all sorts of Klipsch upgrade stuff.
But he doesn't list or link to TS parameters in the auctions.
I remember he claiming somewhere they are electrically equalivent, but that don't say much. I could always email and ask I suppose.

I still need to run the PE line of 15" woofers, for a equal to K-33E.
BEC mentions the early pre-1981 or 1885 Eminence K-33E had a fs of 27 Hz.
Klipsch started making LaScala around 1960.
So these early home type LaScala's may have used EV 15 woofers, or Jensen, or maybe Stephens tru-sonic.
I don't really know what they used from the late '60's until the mid '70's. CTS?
Then Eminence. So they used different woofers of various brands over the years.

The CB15 looks good to me. I'll dig through the PE stuff a little more...

There is a brace mod for Lascala as well, from the side of the doghouse to the side panels. That would stiffen the doghouse and side panels a bit.

Hi Mike,

Just now stumbled onto this place

Just a thought for you.  If you ARE concerned about asthetics then forget the next comments.

If you can live with "plug ugly" then one KICK HINEY 'upgrade' for the LaScalas is to put that K-402 on top of them and take the LaScala to 2-way.

I have not only specifically asked Roy about this (he found it intriguing) but I have since heard it in person with Roy's assistance on x-over parameters.

One thing though if you ever did try that, don't use the same driver combo that Bob is using.  Bob is actually using the midrange driver on the K-402 and virtually EVERY other owner (at Roy's suggestion) has dropped that driver in lieu of using the K-69 for HF reproduction.  Bob is the only one to not make that change.  He HAD the K-69 in hand but prior to that, Klipsch sent him the original driver (what ever is standard on the K-402).  He opted to keep that driver & send the K-69 back.

Oh...  one negative about putting a K402 on top of a LaScala is the K402 is actually LARGER than the LaScala is tall/wide so it's similar to putting a LaScala sideways on top of a normal LaScala.

You might be able to do that or just cut the top section off to reduce its overall height (or even lay laScala on side?)

Just various thoughts.

The K402  not only sounds killer on the Jubilee, LaScala but Roy says it would also work on top of the Belle.

I have also heard the K402 on top of a MWM cabinet running 2 way and that too, was absolutely out of this world.

I think the real secret to those is the K-402 and get away from the K55/K400 setup.

ok, you can :ban:  me now ;-)

Realistic rocks with Klipsch cinema products.......McIntosh is just over-rated.

From what I understand, you have to buy the drivers and the K402 horns as a package from Klipsch.

What's that cost? I'm thinkin' out of my budget.......once you factor in the active crossover with proper time delay and EQ for the horn/driver combination.

My place is way too small for a horn that size........even though I've heard them and I know how they sound......and they sound nice....

The K510 horn/driver combination would be a option, but probably out of my budget as well.

I just went ahead and bought K401 horns from Klipsch. 50 bucks each is a good price, and they are the original horn for a '89 Lascala.
I've found a Selenium driver from Parts Express that will work in place of the K55/PD5 Atlas driver. More sensitive, but a lot less cash.

That was my next step, but I got jacked on the K33 replacement woofers from a Klipsch forum member. No woofers and out 170 bucks.......I hope I can eventually get the money back.

Now I gotta pony up more cash.......anybody wanna buy some tubes? Vintage speakers?

shit
