well since i am very unfamiliar with tubes...i was just wondering when someone specifies that the tubes are matched...what characteristics of the tube are they trying to match?

Usually they just match up the transconductance and bias current with a given voltage that is pretty much it.....  It really helps with keeping the circuit operating optimally (equal on both sides)  It really only matters with a symetrical circuit, like your amp....  Single ended or one tube it doesn't really matter.  If you can buy matched tubes, do it.  They will perform better in circuit.  Maybe Mike S can elaborate..
