There has been some rave about the RH84 single-ended 6BQ5/EL-84 circuit. It uses a 100K resistor for plate to plate, or plate to grid, or partial feedback or whatever the hell they call it.

This is a excellent sounding circuit I think......it could be partly the 20 watt James output transformers, however.
Others have reported good results with smaller Edcor brand OPTs.
Even the stock OPT's out of single-ended 6BQ5 stereo console amplifers would be a good option as well.
For someone wanting to start on tubes, this is a simple and good sounding option. (Provided one has high efficiency speakers.)
